PC Club's Act Green Program

In an effort to encourage electronics recycling nationwide, partnered with ARC International, PC Club has launched “Act Green Program” an initiative designed to develop ways to help customers manage e-waste. The program is designed to help the consumers to recycle their obsolete electronic items at PC Club’s store locations. In addition to the in-store collection, educational materials and our website have been created to promote the program.

Why Should Waste Electronics be Recycled?

Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials, including metals that can be recovered for recycling. Recycling your waste electronics saves resources and protects the Earth because new metals don't have to be mined. In addition, some electronic products contain high enough levels of certain materials, such as lead, that render them hazardous waste when disposed. For instance, California law designates waste televisions and monitors as hazardous. Hazardous wastes cannot be disposed with municipal trash.

E-Waste Recycling

PC CLUB’s Recycling Partner – ARC International. After collecting the e-waste, we then send the units to ARC who recycle the materials resulting from electronic waste such that no waste is sent to the landfill. Electronic information is not only removed from the hard drives, but certificates of destruction can also be provided to ensure the previous computer60wner that their data is not viewed by a third party. ARC does not ship intact computers offshore for dismantling; the dismantling process takes place at ARC recycling facility. The mixed grade plastic cases from e-waste are ground up and then used by manufacturers as raw material for new products. The hard metal from the computer towers, computer monitor glass (which contains lead), and hard drives are smelted and then used as raw material. www.arcic.com

What is California doing about e-waste

For starters, establishing eRecycle.org as California's one-stop shop for information on how to manage unwanted electronics. Through this website consumers can find out where recycling opportunities exist near them. California is also implementing landmark legislation.

Key elements of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 include:

  • Reduction in hazardous substances used in certain electronic products sold in California
  • Collection of an electronic waste-recycling fee at the point of sale of certain products.
  • Distribution of recovery and recycling payments to qualified entities covering the cost of electronic waste collection and recycling.
  • Directive to establish environmentally preferred purchasing criteria for state agency purchases of certain electronic equipment.

PC Club believes that consumer action plays a key role in the success of Act Green Program, and is proud to help our customers see the combined impact of their own recycling efforts.
